Texas Instruments Expands APAC Operations

By Greg McNevin

May 4, 2007: US semiconductor giant Texas Instruments is expanding its presence in APAC with a US$1 billion investment in a new assembly/test operations site in the Philippines that it says will be the most environmentally friendly site of its kind in the world.

The 77,000 square metre plant will be located in the Clark Freeport Zone in Manila and employ 3,000 workers – double the size of TI’s other plant in the country. The investment will take place over a period of ten years,

“This is an important site for TI because it will add capacity to support our growing business and serve our customers,” said Kevin Ritchie, senior vice president of TI’s technology and manufacturing group. “Once built, we expect to quickly ramp the site with the help of our experienced team in Baguio, where we’ve had assembly/test operations for almost three decades.”

The company says that reducing water, energy and waste will be given priority consideration right from the start, and it will be the first ground-up facility to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) registered in the Philippines.

Construction is slated to begin in the second half of this year, with production expected to kick off in the second half of 2008.
