Brocade Boosts Storage Speeds With Silverback

January 10th, 2007: Brocade has kicked off the new year with the purchase of network acceleration technology provider Silverback Systems, a deal that it says will boost the speed and performance of traffic in networked storage environments.

The buy marks the third for Brocade in the last ten months after it picked up NuView and its file management software in March 2006, and its announcement in August that it was taking over McDATA Corporation.

The privately held Silverback develops network processors to accelerate storage traffic, technology that will no doubt benefit Brocade’s Wide Area File Services (WAFS) offerings, as well as expand its product range overall.

“We are committed to providing customers a broad range and choice of high-performance networked storage solutions,” said Dan Crain, Chief Technology Officer at Brocade. “Silverback’s technology and expertise in iSCSI environments will help us to deliver a new set of cost-effective products that broaden the Brocade product portfolio and provide even more options and capabilities to our customers.”

Brocade says that the cash purchase price is not material, however, it expects to record goodwill, in-process research and development, and other intangible assets associated with the transaction in the first quarter of 2007.
