Seagate Unveils a World First Hard Drive

January 18, 2007: Seagate says it has uncovered the world’s fastest hard drive. With its 15,000rpm spinning rate, they’re calling it the Savvio 15K.

So it might be just as fast as other hard drives on the market. But with its 2.5 inch enclosure, Seagate says it is the only device of its size that meets the speed ability of the more common 3.5 inch drives.

Targeting mainstream enterprise applications in standard data centres as well as small and medium business, Seagate says the Savvio 15K can assist in lowering the total cost of ownership. With data centre costs on the rise, that could become a strong selling point in the months ahead.

The Savvio 15K is an addition to the Savvio family of 2.5-inch Serial Attached SCSI enterprise drive solutions. It might be a speedy (and small) hard drive, but that’s not the only thing Savvio is promoting it on. Seagate says its15K drive also ensures ultra-low power consumption which can ultimately, reduce costs.

Sherman Black, senior vice president and general manager for Seagate Enterprise Compute Business, says the 2.5-inch Enterprise form factor represented a new way of thinking. “Now, with the added number of performance and capacity choices offered, many of the leading enterprise system makers are transitioning from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch factor enterprise solutions.”
