Adobe Chases ISO

February 1, 2007: Adobe Systems is gearing up to have its PDF 1.7 specification published by the International Organisation for Standardisation.

The first step to Adobe’s intention is to release the standard to the Enterprise Content Management Association, AIIM. As PDF has already become somewhat of a de facto global standard for information exchange, the goal is to answer the need for open formats, something increasingly being demanded by governments and private organisations alike.

Adobe says industries of all types have now come to rely on PDF for sharing, managing and often storing electronic information. Already Adobe has been working for some time with ISO to deliver PDF as a standard for specific industries and functions such as the PDF for Archive (PDF/A) and the PDF for Exchange (PDF/E.)

Adobe will release the PDF 1.7 specification to a joint committee formed under AIIM to identify issues to be addressed as well as proposed solutions. AIIM will develop a draft document that will later be presented to a Joint Working Group of ISO for development and approval as an International Standard.

John Mancini, President AIIM, says the association is pleased to receive the proposal from Adobe. “Over the last several years we have seen and in many cases helped facilitate a range of ongoing market and customer focused efforts around PDF,” he says.

“These efforts have grown so broadly that it now makes sense for Adobe to let the full specification serve as a unifying umbrella and submit it for approval under the formal ISO standards process.”
