EMC Avamar Awarded Top-Five Status

December 21st, 2006: EMC’s Avamar de-duplication technology has been picked as one of the top five storage developments of the year.

Chosen by eWeek Labs, the data de-duplication software aids in the protection of data and, according to EMC, is accelerating the move from tape to disk-based recovery solutions.

Avamar Technologies was only recently acquired by EMC, but already it has shown its strengths having advanced EMC’s information protection and recovery management capabilities.

EMC says that Avamar backs up data once, and only once, on a global basis. It identifies redundant data segments at the source and skips them, reducing the load on network bandwidth and data stored.

The company says that by using Avamar technologies, customers can achieve a 300:1 daily reduction of data transmission and storage.

"Easy to use and manage, Avamar Technologies' Axion 3.5 is an innovative disk-based backup solution with functionality that, in today's regulatory-sensitive environment, will soon be seen more as a requirement than as a luxury," said eWeek technical analyst Victor Loh.
