New NAS Kit From SGI

November 14th, 2006: Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI) has introduced two new network-attached storage (NAS) appliances, which it says cut administration time in demanding storage environments where immediate access to large amounts of data is required.

Called the InfiniteStorage NAS 4550 and 4050, SGI says that the new appliances can be put into production in a matter of minutes, and done so without sacrificing performance.

The company has designed the 4550 with performance-driven applications in mind, while the NAS 4050 was designed for high capacity environments. The company claims that these new NAS systems have virtually no file system size restrictions and scale as large as 18 Exabytes.

“The new SGI InfiniteStorage NAS appliances are versatile yet can be tailored for specific environments,” according to Bret Cox, director of storage and software marketing, SGI. “A fast, streamlined set up is only one of the many advantages we're offering our customers. Best of all, the new solutions deliver the performance expected from SGI.”

SGI places typical applications for its new NAS duo as media production, on-line analytical processing, energy exploration, bioengineering, life sciences, government, aerospace, data archiving, eDiscovery and for any HPC application that needs file sharing.
