Netapp Offers Compressed VTL

Month Date, 2006: Netapp leaves tradition behind by adding compression capabilities to new VTL suite

Netapp has made the move in an effort to meet increasing demand for VTL and enhance performance capabilities and efficiency.

The change will set competitors apart through the use of hardware for added compression. Other vendors attempting to improve VTL performance have tended to add data de-duplication software.

By utilising compression mechanisms, the system will work by removing redundant data ultimately reducing the file’s size. With such methods the three new products including NearStore VTL300, VTL700 and VTLE1400 will be able to double or triple their capacity for stored backup data.

The VTL products utilise a backup application to allow data to be directly copied to physical tape.
