EMC’s Latest Addition for ILM

Month Date, 2006: In a busy week for EMC, the storage giant has announced the release of new data management solution, ‘Infoscape.’

After closing it’s acquisition of RSA and buying up Network Security, the Infoscape launch is set to assist in EMC’s attempts to move in to the broader IT market and meet the growing concerns of organisations in meeting compliance regulations and file-management problems.

Infoscape will provide a single software solution allowing companies to source, categorise and manage various forms of unstructured information such as word processing documents, e-mails and spreadsheets. It’s a system of automatic classification, a solution that is not particularly new, yet one that respects the increasing need for such technology.

The software uses classification technology and systematically tags files (through headlines, names, dates etc) with basic metadata. Such tags are then used as clues to mark file sensitivity, business value and content. Policies and rules for the storage and location of files are left for customers and users to determine.

Smaller companies such as Kazeon, Scentric and StoredIQ already offer such automatic classification of file systems, yet EMC appears to be the first company of it’s size and history to pick up on the trend. Infoscape is the combined work of EMC’s family of recently acquired document management companies, including Legato Systems, Documentum and Smarts.

“By integrating best-in-class core technologies from recent acquisitions, we’re now able to deliver a game-changing solution to our customer base,” says mark Sorenson, EMC’s Senior Vice President of Information Management Software.

To add to the flurry of activity this week, EMC also has also launched EMC Information Management Strategy Service, a consultancy assisting in the design, build and management of information management systems.

InfoScape is expected to be available from October. The solution will assist in supplying information lifecycle management through its provision of new features and integration with already available storage products.
