Sun and Imation Shake Hands For Storage

February 2, 2006: Sun Microsystems and Imation have announced that they are teaming up to push the boundaries of tape storage.

The two companies intend to jointly work on extending Sun’s existing StorageTekTM T9840 drive platform and investigate alternate storage media technologies, such as Imation’s Ulysses tape drive emulator, for addition in Sun’s automated tape library product line.

As part of the deal Imation will also become an approved supplier to Sun StorageTek for LTO-2 and LTO-3 tape cartidges.

“We have a long history of working with StorageTek, now a subsidiary of Sun, in the development of advanced tape cartridges,” says Frank Russomanno, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Imation. “…we are committed to continue that history of cooperation for the benefit of both companies and our mutual customers."

No new products have been unveiled as yet. The two companies say further details on the partnership will emerge as new technology is announced.
