Sultry Storage In Sabah

February 20, 2006: HP’s StorageWorks 2006 conference kicks off in Kota Kinabalu. Selamat Datang!

As the humidity set in, a throng of thong wearing, short sporting delegates set the tone for the event as the welcome function got underway. This is the tropics after all, and an event dominated by Australians with a dress code listed as “Indiana Jones” is almost the definition of easy-going.

With around 400 people attending the conference this year, little proof is required to recognise the skyrocketing importance of storage systems.

And the buzz amongst the delegates is that capacity isn’t the bee in the proverbial bonnet anymore. Supporting hardware and retrieval capability is what’s keeping IT managers up at night.

After all, how easy is it to find and restore that one meg file from last week’s multi-terabyte backup, when you’re already stretching to get this week’s done? Storage needs are soaring, and while capacity demands can be met with ease now, managing such vast repositories and putting the information they contain to use is the new challenge.

HP will be showcasing its plan of attack alongside Brocade, Cisco, Microsoft, QLogic and McData over the next two days. And if the shorts and anything to go by, adapting to changing storage requirements won’t bump heart rates above those enjoyed in sultry Sabah.
