Adaptec Snaps Up AMD Opteron

February 27, 2006: Adaptec has announced the Australian and New Zealand release of its latest Snap network attached storage (NAS) appliances. The first NAS platform built on AMD’s 64-bit Opteron Processor.

The Snap Server is also the first to support both SAS and SATA drive in one unit, stretching capacity up to 43.2TB of Serial ATA (SATA) or 26.4TB of Serial attached SCSI (SAS).

Adaptec claim that the Snap Server 500 series is the fastest, most economical 1U storage solution available for workgroups, remote offices, departments, small businesses, and medium-sized enterprises.

The 500 series also has a 500GB VTL built in, dual hot-swappable power supplies and the ability to scale from 640GB up to its top 43.2TB with a price-per-GB the company says is as low as US$2.

Software wise the units are powered by the GuardianOS software platform, data protection is provided through CA eTrust antivirus and backups are handled by BakBone's NetVault backup software.

"With the Snap Server 500 family, customers now have several new options for primary and secondary storage at reasonable price points.” says Brian Babineau, industry analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “These new Snap Servers enable customers to take advantage of solutions that utilise SAS or SATA technology to create a tiered storage environment that is driven by the value of the information and its accessibility and availability requirements."

The Snap Server 510 and 520 are currently available in Australian and New Zealand with prices for the 510 starting at A$6722 for the 640GB SATA model. The 1TB or 2TB SATA 520 units start at A$8590 and A$11, 955 respectively. The 1.2TB SAS Snap Server 550 is due for release in March retailing at A$18, 686. All prices are GST inclusive.
