CSIRO Makes $34m Shift To SAP

January 10, 2006: The CSIRO has begun an organisation-wide migration to mySAP after signing a four-year $34 million agreement with Fujitsu in December 2005.

The deal will see Fujitsu man the helm as over 100 applications are replaced with Fujitsu’s single, integrated SAP business system FlexFrame.

Fujitsu claim that FlexFrame, its mySAP business suite developed in conjunction with Network Appliance and SAP in 2002, leads to 62% lower total cost of ownership when compared with traditional SAP installations.

A claim that the CSIRO no doubt supports as it was, according to CSIRO finance general manager David Toll, prepared to do the work in-house if tenders did not come up with an appropriate cost benefit. As it stands, this is the first time the CSIRO has used an external party for such a major project, and the first time a mySAP installation has been deployed on Fujitsu’s FlexFrame.

The system, which will service over 7000 staff Australia-wide, is currently being rolled out with migration of finance, human resource and project management systems to be completed by the end of the year. The second, including intensive project management work and CRM system replacement is expected to be finalised by September 2007.

The deal is a boon for Fujitsu’s Canberra office, who has hired 30 new people to increase its ability to handle large government projects.

“The CSIRO project is a fantastic win for our SAP practice and for the Fujitsu team in Canberra.  It is a great demonstration of our end-to-end capability and collaboration across the wider Fujitsu organisation.  We’re very excited about working with CSIRO and helping it meet its business objectives.” says  Jean-Pierre Deruddere, Executive General Manager, Enterprise Solutions, Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand

IDM is awaiting further comment from both the CSIRO and Fujitsu.
