Cisco Chomps More Consumer Pie

January 17, 2006: Cisco is looking to further extend its reach into the consumer market by way of Internet connected devices.

Back in 1999 Cisco announced its intentions to move into the consumer market by way of high speed internet connectivity and home networking. Since then it has been building up a range of consumer electronics companies through its Linksys Division. Now it is looking to further extend its share of the consumer electronics market.

In a recent interview for The Financial Times, Charles Giancarlo, Cisco's Chief Development Officer said that the internet is enough of a disruptor for it to enter the consumer market.

"Consumer electronics companies have been able to compete on a stand-alone device, but the dynamics of the market are changing" Giancarlo added.

The newspaper said that Cisco is looking to expand its business to consumer devices that connect to the Internet.

In 2005 Cisco made a number of consumer product company purchases via Linksys. These included the Net phone product maker Sipura Technology and DVD player maker Kiss technology.
