Terabytes in Toasters

A Terabyte In A Shoebox

January 31, 2006: Two new sub-AU$2,500 compact network attached storage products are on the market this week: the first is Australian IT distributor Tecksel’s compact, one-terabyte solution, the Yellow Machine; the second is Sabio Digital’s multi-terabyte CM-4.

Developed by Anthology Solutions in the US, the Yellow Machine is a shoe box-sized, plug-in solution for businesses that want a reliable office hub without the expense of a full server solution.

Starting at 1Tb, and expandable to 1.6Tb, the Yellow Machine is an all-in-one network attached storage (NAS) solution for small and medium-sized business and branch offices. It features an eight-port Ethernet switch, RAID 0, 1, 1+0 and 5; single WAN router, double firewall, email archiving, scheduled automatic backups and web access control.

“The Yellow Machine arrives just in time.” claims Leigh Mutimer, Tecksel Australia's director. “Our resellers have been crying out for large centralised storage space that is both secure and easy to use - and The Yellow Machine is just that.”

The Yellow Machine is available now for AU$2,295 including GST.

San Diego-based Sabio Digital’s multi-terabyte box, the CM-4 features an Intel Xscale 400mhz processor, four hard drives and Linux embedded. It can be connected to a PC or Mac via two USB 2.0 ports or its gigabit ethernet connection.

It can be set up for RAID 0, 1 or 5 and the drives can be upgraded from 250Gb to 500Gb each. That’s 2Tb in a box similar in size to a large toaster.

The CM-4 is currently priced at US$1,000 for the 1Tb version. IDM is awaiting local release details.
