Skype adds to Video VoIP

Dec 02, 2005: The world’s favourite free internet telephony software, Skype, has just been upgraded to beta 2.0. And with it comes a host of snappy features such as a simplified user interface, personalisation via skins, a toolbar for outlook contacts and most importantly – support for video calls.

Video over IP (VoIP) has been available in voice and messaging services such as Microsoft’s MSN messenger for quite some time. Inclusion into Skype however, gives its 70+ million clients their number one wish list item, and gives it to them with full-screen support.

“At Skype we want to make talking over the Internet the most natural, simple thing for people all over the world to do. With the release of our new software, it’s never been easier for people to talk to one another for free, and now they can see each other with video as well,” says Niklas Zennström, CEO of Skype.

The momentum behind Skype has been exponentially increasing, especially after eBay splurged US$2.6 billion on the company which is yet to demonstrate any significant profit.

Within the 2.0 release announcement, Skype also declared that it is teaming up with Creative and Logitech to create Skype-certified webcams and headsets.
