Quantum Nails Tape Security Trifecta
December 7, 2005: Tape capacity just keeps on growing. And as it does, the amount of important data stuffed into one place also grows. When you’ve got all those data eggs in one basket, risk skyrockets. To address these concerns, Quantum has unveiled a three-layered data security framework focused specifically on backup, recovery and archive processes.
If a courier loses your tape or worse still, pockets it, suddenly all that server room security means nothing. To combat this, Quantum’s new framework looks at security for standalone tape drives, tape cartridges, tape automation and disk-based backup systems and scrutinises physical access, administrative access and data access.
Physical Access is controlled via Quantum’s new DLTSage Tape Security. DLTSage is firmware feature that only allow data to be read and written when the correct electronic key is used.
This stops casual copying of data, however to clad the security system in iron Quantum has partnered up with Decru to implement its DataFort wire-speed encryption technology.
“Decru is very pleased to work with Quantum to bring storage security solutions to market,” said Kevin Brown, vice president of marketing at Decru. “Quantum’s DLTSage Tape Security feature and our DataFort appliance are highly complementary and, together, provide multiple layers of protection for organizations' digital assets.”
Quantum cites a study completed earlier this year by the Enterprise Strategy Group which found that less than 20 percent of companies regularly encrypt their data as it’s backed up to tape. Whether the reason is cost, performance loss or recovery speeds, encryption is just not on the cards for many businesses.
It should be considering the difference between private and public data boils down to a pocket sized tape.
DLTSage will be available in upcoming quantum drives at no extra cost.
