HP Hedges Bets on Next Gen DVD

December 19, 2005: Just as Sony’s Blu-Ray technology seemed to be taking the lead in the next generation DVD contest HP, one of its bigger supporters, has suddenly decided to support both formats.

HP wants both Mandatory Managed Copy and iHD technology supported by next generation discs. Mandatory Managed Copy allows consumers to make legal copies of video content, while iHD gives producers greater freedom to create content with better interactivity.

HP has requested the Blu-Ray Disc Association include both, of which Mandatory Managed Copy has been adopted. Both technologies are already included on HD-DVD.

"We're encouraged that the Blu-ray Disc Association is adopting Mandatory Managed Copy. Because HP wants to deliver the most user-friendly and cost-effective solution to our customers, we have decided to support both formats," said Maureen Weber, general manager, Personal Storage Business, HP. "By joining the HD-DVD Promotions Group and continuing work with the Blu-ray Disc Association, HP will be in a better position to assess true development costs and, ultimately, provide the best and most affordable solution for consumers."

Who do you think will win out of BluRay and HD-DVD?
