Microsoft Says Goodbye to Mac IE

December 20, 2005: Microsoft has released a statement declaring that the time of Internet Explorer (IE) for Mac is over come new years day.

In June 2003, Microsoft announced that development of Internet Explorer for Mac would cease. Now that we are nearing the end of 2005, we are also nearing the end of Microsoft’s support for IE Mac with it being officially discontinued on the 31st of December.

Internet Explorer will still be available for download from Microsoft until the 31st of January 2006, after which it will be removed.

Microsoft itself recommends that Mac users “migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari” and says it is ceasing support for Mac IE because it is “focusing development efforts on Mac Business Unit products like Office for Mac, Virtual PC for Mac, and Microsoft Messenger for Mac.”

Mac users will now have no option to do what most of them already have, and embrace alternatives such as FireFox, Safari and Opera.
