Symantec's turn to outline its Vision

Oct 11, 2005: Symantec chose the platform of its annual Vision Conference for IT professionals, at Sydney's Convention & Exhibition Centre, made a series of product announcements.

It is the first year that the vent has come under the Symantec banner, having previously been known as Veritas Vision, until Veritas merged with Symantec at the turn of the year.

Symantec introduced the Backup Exec 10d for Windows Servers software including the Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server. The software solution eliminates backup windows, delivers web-based end user file retrieval functionality and offers one complete disk-to-disk-to-tape data protection solution.

Traditional backups must be done during a specific window of time and involves a combination of full, incremental and differential tape backups, which can be complex and costly to manage, but Symantec says that with the pure disk technology of Backup Exec 10d, including the Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server, files are protected continuously.

"Downtime can strike at any time and in various forms from malicious threats, viruses and worms or natural disasters. The important point is that the data is preserved,” said Andy Honl, senior product marketing manager for Backup Exec suite of products.

"Backup Exec 10d ensures reliable, continuous disk-based backup while introducing new secure self-service data recovery leveraging Backup Exec Retrieve, the new web-based file recovery tool available with 10d. Administrators can breathe a little easier knowing Backup Exec 10d eliminates the back up window and allows them to quickly restore data using a standard web browser."

Symantec also announced the company’s strategy for ensuring the integrity of information for Windows departments and enterprises. Key to the company’s strategy is to secure information and keep it safe from the myriad of malicious threats on the Internet. Second, information must always be available, kept safe from administrator errors, hardware failures and site disasters.

“Irrespective of whether dealing with malicious code, a natural disaster or simply a hardware failure, organisations face unprecedented levels of risk to their daily IT operations,” said David Sykes vice president, Pacific, Symantec. “Together, Symantec AntiVirus, Symantec Backup Exec and Symantec LiveState Recovery products offer complete data and system protection solutions for customers with Windows departments and enterprises.”

Eka Hartono, senior manager, product marketing, commented: “With the release of LiveState Recovery, customers are getting high level of performance, flexibility and reliability with simplicity of use. This version combines the industry’s first volume-based hardware independent restoration technology with virtual tools and remote, lights-out technology to create a significant advancement in Windows system and disaster recovery.”
