Server alternative to CD and DVD backup

Jul 05, 2005: Small businesses can have their business files, accounting records and emails automatically backed up every day now without the inconvenience of alternating tapes, CDs or DVDs.

solution for small businesses, aimed at providing automatic backups with quick restore features, remote notification, and simple storage management for small business Windows servers.

It allows users to use 200GB on the drive, but this can be increased to 300GB of compressed files.

Edwin Tien, the country manager for Australia and New Zealand, said that this system is perfect for small businesses with a small network set-up.

"It provides security, reliability and simplicity for small businesses. It is much better than backing up with CDs or DVDs because it can contain so much more critical information. For instance, CDs can only backup up 650-600MB at one time, DVDs can only backup 4.7GB and you have to keep making multiple copies to match the backup that this system offers.

"Most small businesses do no have IT staff and rely on solutions that are easy to install and easy to use, so extending our Maxtor One Touch product into the small businesses server market is a natural fit."

Tien added that the Maxtor OneTouch II Small Business Edition drive has no complex menus or commands, and no in-depth technical knowledge is required to set it up.

In addition, Maxtor's setup wizard is set to automatically backup everything on the server's local disk drives every night at 10.00pm, but people have the option to set their own times for backups.

Email notification is made when backups are completed. Tien added that some of the advantages of the system include improved productivity with automated unattended backups because there is not any waiting around to swap tapes; the elimination of human errors in tape handling; and a self-grooming storage management feature that automatically purges duplicate or older version files to maintain the capacity level of the drive.
