Beijing prepares for information challenge of Olympic games

Jul 11, 2005: China will face a huge challenge in managing information after it builds a new terminal to double the capacity of Beijing Capital International's Airport in preparation for increased number of visitors during the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic games.

The new terminal is expected to double the airport's passenger capacity from 27 million to 60 million.

It has enlisted the expertise of Unisys to help it develop and integrate the core operational systems from BCIA's new terminal. Unisys will provide and implement the airport's Ground Operations Information System, which will be based on the Unisys Central Integrated Information Management System.

Chen Guo Xing, the chief commander of BCIA Expansion Project Headquarters, said that the Terminal 3 project is a key national project and is one of China's Olympic projects.

"Systems integration is vital for the success of the project and we are very pleased to have appointed Unisys. They have the proven SI capability and experience to be the Master Systems Integrator for this - the largest scale, most advanced and modern international airport hub in China."

The CIIMS solution provides real time information about flight arrivals and baggage delivery while centralising accounting and other airport functions.

In addition, it integrates information that flows from systems around the airport, collating and storing data in a central airport database, which is the Unisys Operations Management solution, while supplying up-to-date information to the airport community.

Unisys's role will involve integrating more than 50 IT systems that and will use its 3D Visible Enterprise foundation system to provide BCIA executives with an understanding of current and future operations for the airport.
