NetApp eases the transition from tape to disk

Apr 08, 2005: Network Appliance is in the process of buying Alacritus, known for its Virtual Tape Library software, which allow disks to appear like a tape library to a backup application, using the superior reliability and performance features of disk technology.

NetApp claims that the benefits of the VTL product is that it does not cause any disruption to backup scripts and software, while improving recovery time and backup and restore reliability and the disk-to-disk system simplifies management while increasing throughput from primary storage to VTL to tape.

It also integrates with real physical tape libraries for the seamless creation of removable media assets.

Amit Pandey, the vice president and general manager of the Network Appliance NearStore business unit, said: "Alacritus extends our ability to provide a robust data protection solution to our customers and will help accelerate their transitions to disk-based backup.

"VTL compliments and expands our comprehensive suite of disk-based backup solutions to protect the enterprise and rapidly recover data.

Pandey added that it offers a simple and economical path to disk for customers who want improved reliability and performance with their back-up solutions without altering their current tape environments.

NetApp also recently announced in December, 2004, a solution that combines Alacritus VTL with NetApp NearStore and FAS storage systems to back up NetApp storage as well as UNIX and Windows servers.

This solution has been certified with backup software from Bakbone, CA, CommVault, Dantz, EMC/Legato, IBM and Veritas.
