Nexsan is Diligent in virtual tape effort

Nexsan Technologies is to combine its SATA/ATA-based disk arrays with Diligent Technologies' VTF Open software, a move that will allow customers to implement disk rather than tape in their backup and recovery operations without the need to change existing policies, practices or procedures of the user's present backup configuration.

"Using Nexsan disk-based solutions as an alternative to tape in the backup and recovery cycles is an intelligent way to dramatically improve enterprise operations while lowering the total cost of ownership," said Brendan Kinkade, vice president of marketing at Nexsan. "Diligent's VTF Open virtual tape software emulates one or more tape libraries and allows data to be backed up to disk, which enables faster and more reliable backup and restore capabilities while reducing mechanical and human errors often associated with tape."

Mike Parise, VP sales & marketing at Diligent Technologies added: "By partnering our virtual tape facility technology with Nexsan's ATA disk solutions, we are able to provide customers with a cost effective alternative to their existing tape-based architectures while improving the reliability, performance and availability of their data."

Nexsan and Diligent's joint virtual tape solution appears to the backup application as one or many actual tape libraries. The backup application accesses drives, robotics and cartridges with Diligent's VTF Open solution as it would a physical tape library. Through its use of disk in the backup process, this solution eliminates much of the burden, complexity and difficulty of using tape for backups and restores.
