Juniper to secure mobile communications

Apr 29,2005: Juniper Networks has signed an agreement to buy Peribit Networks and Redline Networks to help it complete its strategy of securing and assuring the delivery and performance of applications over an IP network.

Peribit Networks develops WAN optimisation appliances and aims to provide customers with increased WAN capacity, faster application performance, prioritised applications delivery and systemwide visibility of network and application performance.

Redline Networks prides itself on designing network solutions that maximise performance, flexibility and scalability of web-enabled enterprise data centres and public web sites. It's family of Application Front Ends, enables users to control and customise any web-based environment.

The Peribit Networks acquisition is valued at about US$337 million in cash, and the Redline Networks acquisition is valued at US$132 million.

Juniper has bought these companies because it believes that WAN optimisation and Application Front End technologies are key elements in addressing the performance and security issues associated with an increasingly distributed and mobile enterprise.

Scott Kriens, the chairman and CEO of Juniper Networks, said: "Juniper Networks is capitalising on its leadership position to redefine the networking market. The addition of application acceleration technologies to Juniper Networks' best-in-class routing and security solutions is a natural extension of our traffic processing strategy. We are raising the bar on what users can and should expect from the network."

Gartner, Inc., added: "Business demand for application-acceleration solutions increased dramatically during the past two years. While a number of stand-alone market segments were developed to solve specific application performance issues, we are seeing a rapid consolidation of the market into a more comprehensive application-acceleration market in which multifunction platforms are the norm."

One of Juniper's key motivations for these acquisitions is to find a way to protect the security of applications as they become networked over long distances, because these are assurances are compromised the further connections are stretched.

Juniper Networks is looking to combine these technologies to deliver a powerful and unique solution to address these issues head on, for what it is dubbing Application Assurance.
