Mar 24, 2005: Hewlett-Packard has released new products that aim to integrate storage, archiving, filing, search, databases and servers provided by different companies, so that organisations can now deal with one vendor instead of many.
A new HP StorageWorks Reference Information Storage System (RISS) open Application Programming Interface (API) (RISS v1.1) will provide this grid computing service at twice the storage as the old version, costing half the price.The storage capacity of the smart cells will increase from 400GB to 850GB.
Frank Harbist, the vice president and general manager of StorageWorks software at HP, said: "As all content and processes move from physical to mobile, digital and virtual, the need to retrieve information quickly and efficiently is paramount to success.
"This announcement is yet another milestone in our strategy to automate the information lifecycle from end-to-end and allow our customers to adapt to constantly changing business environments."
HP is planning to expand the services provided by RISS API over the next 12 months, by including web services, common Internet and network file systems (CIFS and NFS), and additional connectors for key vertical markets such as healthcare.
An extra archiving feature will also be incorporated into this new version too, and data retrieval will be accelerated by evenly distributing full-text indexes and original content across many storage "smart cells", which form the basis of HP's StorageWorks Grid Architecture.
HP has also introduced HP StorageWorks Reference Information Manager for Messaging (RIM) v1.1, which is an archiving solution that reduces the cost of email storage mailboxes by using a lower cost archive pool whilst retaining data according to compliance regulations.
A new product, called HP StorageWorks File System Extender (FSE) v3.1, simplifies and reduces the cost of long-term storage of file-system-based data. This automates data movement so that the right information is in the right place at the right time.
