Plumtree boosts performance of portals
Mar 29, 2005: Organisations will have greater visibility over the use of portals throughout the enterprise to analyse data and work out how they can improve their portals to provide better business results, thanks to the release of new software by Plumtree.
The Plumtree Analytics Server delivers real-time reporting on portal activity and content use to ease the complexities of portals as they continue to increase in size and sophistication.
The difference between this software and traditional web software that analyses web data is that instead of aggregating information about application server behaviour from batched, historical log files, it uses lightweight, plug-in filters at multiple tiers of the portal architecture to report information to the Analytics Server database in real-time.
Plumtree claims that this method provides a deeper, more accurate system for providing analysis on the activity of information.
Ray Valdes, the research director at Gartner, believes that an analytics tool for monitoring portal activity, such as this, has much to do with human behaviour and business processes as with technology.
"In the past, managers of the enterprise portal have lacked industrial-strength tools that help them determine what is preventing people from using portal applications effectively, what characteristics from popular collaboration communities can be propagated to all portal communities, how effectively people are collaborating together, and finally how infrastructure is supporting the needs of its users."
Metrics can be tracked on Plumtree portals running on Microsoft IIS, Pache Tomcat, BEA WebLogic and IBM WebSphere application servers. It also available on Windows and Solaris and supports SQL Server and Oracle databases.
Plumtree hopes that this software will help customers to understand the usage patterns for better design, management, and investment planning of their portal pages, web workspaces and applications.
