Fujitsu has managed to hold on to its outsourcing contract with the NSW Road Traffic Authority for the next seven years after already managing the data centre and related information technology operations since 1997.

RTA has offered Fujitsu a three-year contract for the provision of Data centre Outsourcing and related services from July 2005, and RTA has options to extend the new contract for another four years.

The RTA's role for the NSW Government includes promoting road safety, traffic management, driver licensing and vehicle registration. It also takes care of direct or indirect management of almost 18,000km of State Roads and National Highways.

With 6,900 employees, 180 offices statewide, and 129 motor registries, there is a lot of information to manage.

Greg Carvouni, the RTA's chief information officer said: "This will ensure that our IT systems continue to operate at the very high levels of reliability necessary to help manage the safe and efficient use of the road transport network - while reducing costs relating to our IT environment."

Rod Vawdrey, the chief executive officer of Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand, added: "Fujitsu is extremely pleased to have held its place as the RTA's IT infrastructure provider. This contract demonstrates our ability to deliver through long-term partnerships with customers and to continue to innovate in terms of costs, service management and ultimately end-user performance."

The new contract means that Fujitsu will still host about 800 corporate applications for the RTA from two state-of-the-art data centres in Sydney. This will include the DRIVES information management system for vehicle licensing and registration, the Integrated Management System for RTA business operations, the Property Information and Management System and the Road Information Systems.
