Veritas quick to make Sony AIT smarter

Feb 8, 2005: Sony has announced plans to incorporate Veritas' BackupExec QuickStart Edition with many of its Advanced Intelligent Tape drives and DDS-4 models to help entry level storage buyers cope with potential backup disasters.

This announcement comes hot off the heals of Sony's recent release of its AIT Turbo drives, designed to provide bigger capacity and faster transfer speeds than its AIT predecessors, as well as providing a high standard storage format to entry level customers.

Alan Sund, the general manager for tape storage solutions in Sony electronics' component and business solutions division, said: "Our new tape backup bundle delivers value to our channel partners and end-users by combining Sony's powerful and reliable tape drive storage offerings with the latest backup and recovery software from Veritas, the industry's leading backup software vendor.

"We expect the bundle to be especially appealing to small-to-mid-sized businesses that are looking for a complete, simple, scalable and tested solution to reliably address their growing storage needs."

Jeremy Burton, the executive vice president for the data management group at Veritas software, added: "Veritas Backup Exec QuickStart is ideal for quick and easy backup of data on single servers because it is simple to set up and manage and provides core capabilities for first-time server and storage buyers with basic IT needs.

"Bundling Backup Exec QuickStart with Sony storage devices and other key partners' products makes it even easier for customers to gain access to leading backup and recovery solutions from Veritas. We are excited to have Sony on board as one of our first OEM partners for this new product."

Veritas and Sony have worked very closely during testing to make sure that the hardware and software are completely compatible with one another. The software even has preset backup templates so that users can start backing up critical data as soon as it is taken out of the box.
