Fibre channel sales tipped to double by 2008

Jan 31, 2005: The annual worldwide Fibre Channel SAN market is set to break the US$3 billion (AU$3.87 billion) revenue mark by 2008, with modular SAN switch revenues to more than double by 2009, industry analysts have predicted.

According to a five-year forecast report published by Dell'Oro Group, which covers revenue, port shipments, and price forecasts for Fibre Channel Switch and Fibre Channel host bus adaptor (HBA) markets, annual worldwide sales of Fibre Channel switch and HBA equipment are expected to experience significant growth during the next five years, exceeding US$3 billion in revenues by 2008.

The report also indicates that revenues from modular SAN switches will more than double between 2004 and 2009.

"The modular segment of the SAN switch market will see robust growth as enterprises consolidate their SAN fabrics, extend the geographic reach of their SANs, and reduce elements in their network by utilising feature-rich, high-port density devices," said John Carvell, Principal Analyst of SAN research at Dell'Oro Group.

"This demand is coupled with strong customer acceptance of next generation switching platforms, such as those introduced by Brocade, Cisco, CNT, and McData," added Carvell.
