Sony turbo boosts data migration

Jan 31, 2005: New Advanced Intelligent Tape drives have been released by Sony to, giving a welcome boost to organisations that need to migrate data from old storage technologies to a modern, higher standard format.

The AIT-E Turbo has 20GB of native storage capacity (52GB when compressed), and the AIT-1 Turbo features 40GB of native capacity (104GB, when compressed). Both drives also still use the same compact 3.5-inch drive mechanism and dust-resistant design as standard AIT drives.

Vincent Bautista, Sony Australia's product manager for tape streamer, said: "Our new Turbo drives are a perfect fit for cost-conscious users looking to migrate to a tried and tested robust technology that is easily capable of accommodating their future storage needs.

"We believe these new AIT Turbo drives will appeal to users of older technology such as DDS or DAT, which, despite being at the end of its development roadmap, has a world-wide installation base of around 10-million. AIT Turbo offers nearly double the capacity and performance at a comparable cost-per-gigabyte."

Sony said that with the introduction of the AIT Turbo models, AIT-1 and AIT-2 "standard" will progressively decline. AIT-3 and AIT-4 will still continue and will be positioned at the mid to high-end segment of the market.

However, with the exception of AIT-E Turbo, the AIT "standard" media will work with the new Turbo drives. AIT-1 and AIT-2 Turbo drives are backwards read and write compatible to existing AIT "standard" media, so an AIT-2 Turbo drive, apart from its own media, will also work with AIT-2 and AIT-1 "standard" tapes.

The new Turbo drives will also be available in internal and external drives. The internal drives will be available in SCSI or ATAPI/IDE versions. The external drives will be available in SCSI or USB-2 and Firewire (IEEE1394) versions.
