Hitachi opens its SANs out to SMBs

Dec 9, 2004: Small and medium-sized businesses have been offered a helping hand by Hitachi Data Systems thanks to a new SAN starter solution based on the company's new Thunder 9520V Workgroup Modular Storage system.

According to HDS, it will focus on the Microsoft Windows 2003 Server platform market to offer SMBs enterprise standard features and will go head to head with EMC's CX300 and HP's MSA1500 solutions.

Hu Yoshida, the CTO of Hitachi Data Systems, said: "Customers in smaller businesses are facing many of the same problems as the big enterprises - complex environments, high people costs due to fragmented management tools, valuable data that is poorly protected, growth that is difficult to accommodate, less than optimal performance, and solutions that are expensive and difficult to implement.

"Until now, these companies had to settle for marginal storage products with questionable reliability. The Thunder 9529V enables our Channel partners to deliver a simple, reliable, easy to install and cost effective solution that addresses problems SMBs have to tackle with limited resources."

Scott Genereux, the senior vice president of global marketing and global channels at HDS, said that the new Hitachi Thunder 9520V Workgroup Modular Storage system delivers 4.2 GigaBytes per second of cached bandwidth, which is six times that of the nearest ATA based comparative product.

"With the announcement of the Thunder 9520V, we are making Hitachi's legendary technological prowess - usually enjoyed by the world's largest financial institutions, telecommunications giants and airlines - accessible to small and medium businesses.

"Now these companies can immediately benefit from our Application Optimised Storage approach to solutions, enabling the deployment of storage according to a business application's performance, availability, and cost requirements - while at the same time providing potential huge cost savings."

HDS aims to help SMBs overcome scalable issues by offering SAN Starter Solutions, which include pre-configured storage systems and components from leading SAN Infrastructure companies, such as:

Brocade SilkWorm 3252, with online training ,web tools for simple switch set-ups, configuration and management; Emulex LP101 Host Bus Adapter, which includes a Quick-Install Guide; and McDATA Sphereon 4500, with SANpilot to simplify SAN management.

John McArthur, the group vice president and general manager of IDC, said: "Easy to deploy SAN starter solutions, such as those available from Hitachi Data Systems and its partners, reduce the complexity and simplify the purchasing decision for the first-time SAN buyer."
