Cisco promises tighter network security

Security within the network is set to be enhanced following the acquisition of Protego Networks by Cisco Systems, which provides security monitoring and threat management appliances for enterprises and small-to-medium business networks.

Cisco will pay about US$65 million in cash for Protego, which has protects that have the ability to detect, correlate and mitigate threats in the network, extending Cisco's Self-Defending Network Initiative.

Cisco has been increasing the security capabilities of its products over the last year since the company unveiled its Network Admission Control program, which is a security architecture, which merges virus scanning with network policing to prevent attacks from hitting the network.

Richard Palmer, the vice president in Cisco's security technology group, said: "Cisco is committed to providing customers with end-to-end, multi-layered, and integrated security and Cisco's Self-Defending Network initiative builds proactive and advanced security capabilities directly into the network.

"The acquisition of Protego further emphasises Cisco's commitment to network security and their leadership in security monitoring, threat management and mitigation complements our ongoing work in security."

The Protego products are designed to help companies to use network intelligence to accurately identify and eliminate network attacks while maintaining network compliance.

Protego is already a member of Cisco's AVVID partner program and both companies have been working together to sell security products to customers, so it is easy to see how Protego will add value to Cisco's portfolio.
