Satyam launches grid computing hub

Dec 23, 2004: Customers intrigued and curious about setting up a grid computing infrastructure within their organisations can direct their questions, reservations and interest at a new Grid Computing Practice, which aims to provide advice and direction.

Grid computing has been talked about as the "new age technology" that can allow an enterprise to make the best use of its computer resources.

The Satyam in-house Grid Lab consists of 200 nodes across two locations, modelling a typical enterprise-wide network.

It is fitted with grid computing hardware/software to replicate a grid environment with 500 Gigaflops of computer power. Customers can use this to run applications that test the advantages of a grid system.

Raghuraman, the senior vice-president of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, talked about the advantages of applying a grid system to his pharmaceutical company, which involved submitting a large database of 59,000 molecules to run on the grid of 50 nodes.

"We at Reddy's Laboratories realise the importance of reducing the time for drug discovery and decided to try the technology of grid computing in our drug discovery process.

"Satyam computer services built the grid and ran one of our key applications on it. The result was amazing. The run time was reduced by 25 days on a stand alone machine to about 16 hours on a grid of 50 nodes."

At the moment, 12 percent of companies say they have either deployed or are planning to deploy a grid computing implementation over the next year.

IDC predicts that the world grid market will exceed US£12 billion by 2007.
