RSA warns of e-commerce lack of confidence

Nov 8th, 2004: RSA Security has warned that businesses still have a lot of work to do to convince customers that the personal details can be protected securely on the Internet due to the ongoing threat of identity fraud.

Speaking at the RSA conference this week in Barcelona, the director of technology at RSA Security said that their needs to be a federated identity policy to save customers from losing confidence about trading over the Internet.

He says that hundreds of thousands of people need to be authenticated otherwise people will begin to abandon the Internet.

He blamed successful phishing on major banks and e-commerce sites, such as eBay, as being one of the major reasons for causing a lack of confidence.

He praised Liberty Alliance for its effort to build a security group, which included AOL, MasterCard and American Express, that is trying to allow companies to share authentication methods.

He also highlighted that big organised crime gangs have been deliberately targeting e-commerce businesses to boost their crime network, which is yet another reason to up the ante with authentication protection procedures.
