Insecurity over Internet cafes and wireless technology

Concerns have been raised about the security of Internet cafes, kiosks and wireless technology for carrying out online banking transactions following a recent survey, which has revealed that fraud is still a big problem for most businesses.

KPMG carried out the survey, which revealed that 45 percent of corporations that were surveyed admitted that he had been hit by fraud, but worryingly, only seven percent of those organisations said that they were worried about fraud.

This is because most companies accept many types of fraud to be a part of life, so accept it as one of the business risks they have to face.

Dean Newlan, the executive director for KPMG forensic, cited that online banking fraud is very difficult control and individuals need to be very wary.

"Individuals should be careful and should read the bulletins provided by their bank every time they log on to Internet banking. There is good advice there about avoiding online fraud, but most people usually skip this advice because it is so long to read.

"People should never open unsolicited emails or attachments from somebody who they do not know. Using Internet cafes or kiosks for Internet banking is very risky. Somebody could quite easily go into the café after you have been in there and load up a sniffer program. This will also them to find out your account details and password and use it to take money from your account."

He says that a large percentage of the Australian population currently use online banking - 37 percent - so this shows how many people are exposed to the possibility of fraud.

"Also, people should be careful of using wireless technology for online banking because at the start of most wireless sessions, the pages are not encrypted."

The survey conducted by KPMG, called the "Forensic Fraud Survey 2004 Advisory", also revealed that 78 percent of major fraud cases that have hit major corporations were carried out by internal staff.
