New search engine learns from user habits

Nov 26th, 2004: A new search engine has dared to enter the already crowded market, dominated by the likes of Google, but promises to provide search results based on the habits of its users.

Ansearch, based in Melbourne, will launch next week, with its aim of addressing an oversight in the marketplace by allowing sites to be ranked according to genuine popularity and eliminating duplicate listings through the profiling of websites rather than individual pages.

Ansearch claims that it offers Internet searchers a "voice" by ranking websites according to their popularity based on users' web search and browsing behaviour.

Dean Jones, the CEO of Ansearch said: "Searches conducted on Ansearch will generate only the most relevant websites to a user's initial query. We deliberately set out to emphasis quality over quantity so as to increase the probability of finding sites that are better correlated to the specific needs of the users."

It will include a regular 'Top 1000" listing of websites and top ranking keywords pertaining to searches conducted on the Ansearch site.

This will include current topics of interest, such as "Paris Hilton", "election", "Internet banking" and "Christmas shopping".

Louisa Williams, the marketing manager for Ansearch, added: "We want to slowly attack the mainstream search market with realistic goals. The search engines available now are not quite what users are looking for. With our engine, we will use proprietary technology to read what the user habits are, so that we can report more specific sites relevant to exactly what they are looking for.

"Our engine will make better use of keywords. The problem that other search engines have made is that they have spread themselves too thin by being a portal and a search engine. We aim to just concentrate on being an advanced search engine."

Ansearch will add more functionality to its site as it leads up to its commercial launch in 2005. In the meantime, the company is intent upon building up a loyal user base and providing users with a distinctive search experience.
