Asimov spearheads DAM inspiration

Nov 30th, 2004: Many people will associate I, Robot with the recent success of Will Smith's latest movie, but tonight people will be treated to the work of Isaac Asimov, who wrote the original novel about I, Robot, at a digital asset management event in Sydney.

The Graphic Arts Services Association of Australia will present this information on: "DAM - saving time and money", which aims to teach people about how to manage media assets such as images, layouts, presentations, video, audio and text.

Ricky Patten, the director of DataBasics, will be one of the three main speakers at the Digital Asset Management Information Evening, to be held at the RG Hotel on Capital Square, 431-439 Pitt Street, Sydney from 5.30pm until 7.30pm tonight.

He aims to educate about 80 visitors on the value of using Canto Cumulus to manage digital assets efficiently through using the technology to express his passion and interest in the famous author Asimov and the story of I, Robot.

"My subject will be based on Asimov, one of the greatest science fiction writers ever, who inspired many other science fiction ideas over the last few decades. The aim of my presentation will be to show how to locate and organise digital assets when are there on different formats, such as Word and PDF, and how to unite them into one standard, such as the Dublin Core.

"The Dublin Core is a format used by government departments to create one standard that can many different departments can use. I hope people will enjoy the evening and will leave knowing more about how digital asset management can help their business needs."

Patten will also talk about the importance of metadata; digital rights issues; valuing assets and compliance with major metadata standards, e.g. IPTC, XMP, XML, AGLS, as well as Dublin Core.

He says that many people do not think they need to use this technology because they did not use it ten years ago, but he wants to show them that digital asset management can make a difference to their organisations because digital assets are increasing rapidly are they often the original source of material now, so therefore the assets need to be managed more carefully.
