EMC buys Dantz to boost SMB data protection

Oct 13th, 2004: EMC Corporation has bought Dantz Development Corporation so that it can offer backup and recovery software and services to small and midsize businesses in need of data protection solutions.

Dantz's products provide advanced technology that is complementary to EMC's in disk-based backup and recovery.

EMC hopes the acquisition of Dantz will help EMC extend its reach and offer customers products that cover the whole backup and recovery market, including the fast growing SMB market.

Dave DeWalt, the executive vice president of EMC software group, said: "Dantz is a strategic acquisition in line with EMC's strategy to extend our reach and focus on the fast-growing SMB market of next-generation high-growth customers. While the majority of EMC's offerings to date have been targeted at the enterprise and commercial markets, Dantz represents EMC's first major SMB software entry with purpose-built products targeted specifically to the needs of SMB customers.

"Dantz helps EMC methodically enter the SMB software market and hit the ground running with an extremely strong and well-regarded product platform, wide-reaching and deep channels to market, and synergistic connection points with EMC's current technology and channel partnerships."

Dantz provides the Retrospect products, which offers backup and recovery for file servers, desktops, notebooks and business-critical applications.

EMC believes that Dantz's advanced technology will provide customers with complementary information protection solutions ranging from enter-level to the highest enterprise requirements.

Along with EMC's disk-based backup and recovery, this should form the foundation for recovery management, which is predicted to be the next wave in backup and recovery.
