IBM launches framework for managing compliance

IBM has released a new compliance framework to help healthcare organisations, financial services and many other industries meet high-pressured storage demands imposed by the government.

IBM's Risk and Compliance Framework is designed to help organisations determine their IT requirements based on compliance mandates, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Basel II and other regulations that require data to be kept for a specific time frame.

According to IBM, using the framework, organisations can design and deploy an IT architecture that can help them deal better with a wide range of compliance initiatives while also increasing business efficiencies.

Jim Bailey, the vice president of Trustmark, said: "We have reviewed IBM's Risk & Compliance framework and believe that it will help us reduce the complexity of managing an IT environment that can support our regulator compliance efforts. It was an easy choice for us to select IBM's solution for mail and messaging retention."

Pat Greary, the CMO of Searchspace added: "The new risk and compliance framework from IBM helps us rapidly identify problem areas for our customers. The graphic nature of the framework rapidly adapts to our customers needs in the financial services industry and different company models."

According to Gartner Group, companies that deploy compliance management architectures will usually spend 50 percent less annually to meet federal requirements than companies who do not do that.

IDC has highlighted that 43 percent of North American companies have recently bough new software and have upgraded their technology to meet compliance regulations.

IBM will offer TotalStorage DR550, powered to IBM's Power5 processor and capable of storing up to 56 terabytes of data. The system is managed through IBM's Tivoli Data Storage for Data Retention software.

The TotalStorage tapeline is also part of the framework. It supports attaching the IBM 3494 B10 and B20 Virtual Tape Server models to the IBM TotalStorage 3592 Tape Drive. This allows for long-term data archiving.
