IBM, Siemens ease medical storage

IBM Corp. and Siemens AG have teamed up to provide medical imaging management systems to help ease the growing problem of storing ever increasing volumes of digital medical images.

Siemen's radiology information system and picture archiving and communication system will be linked to IBM's eServer and Total Storage technology to address the problem.

IBM's systems allows hospitals to use Siemen's Integrated Radiology Suite (SIENET) by offering storage capacity and performance management on an "on-demand" basis.

SIENET increases productivity both in radiology and related clinical departments by integrating imaging systems with information systems in the rest of the hospital.

This combined solution will help hospitals to save money because they will not have to front up the investment for storage systems required for digital image management, and they only have to pay for what they use.

IBM will manage the storage operations and maintenance remotely from the Internet, allowing IT staff at the hospital to concentrate on other tasks.

The digital images will have the ability to be transmitted via the Internet to other medical facilities and viewed by health specialists in remote locations.

It can help speed up diagnosis and lead to faster decisions for treatments.
