UDO on sharp increase worldwide

UDO media, drives and libraries are experiencing a sharp uptake in support around the world and Plasmon, the makers, believe that is just the start of a huge wave of interest in the technology designed to address compliance needs.

More than 30 storage management software packages now offer storage management and application software support packages for UDO.

These companies include EMC, Tivoli, Veritas, IBM, Computer Associates, FileNet and Pegasus.

UDO is designed for organisations seeking secure retention of important information. It succeeds 5.25 inch Magneto Optical technology as the new professional optical storage standard.

It breaks the mould for optical storage solutions with increased storage capacity and dramatically lower archival storage costs.

Lachlan Macdonald, the managing director of Austor, the Australasia distributor for Plasmon, said: "We have experienced a growth in the take up of UDO because so many companies are interested in the compliance benefits it offers.

"The media can be removable, so if somebody needs to get hold of data quickly to present in a litigation case, they can access they can get it immediately. UDO offers high capacity too and can either be recorded over just once or many times, depending on how an organisation would like to use the technology.

"It is the top of the generation for optical storage and addressed many of the compliance concerns relevant today. This is just the start of the surge. The popularity of UDO is going to keep growing worldwide."

UDO features blue laser recording rather than the red lasers used in previous optical drives such as MO and DVD. Blue lasers achieve far greater data densities, resulting in dramatically higher media capacities.

First generation UDO products will have a capacity of 30GB, with capacity reaching 120GB by the third generation. The drive and media capacity are scheduled to double every 18 to 24 months.
