Citrix keeping NSW in rude health

Access infrastructure systems provider Citrix Systems has secured a three year contract with the NSW Department of Health which will allow NSW Health to deploy and administer strategic clinical and corporate applications from consolidated hosting centres to all public health facilities within the State, which could extend up to all of NSW Health’s approximately 90,000 employees. The deployment will enable equity of access whilst significantly reducing IT resource and infrastructure costs.

Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server manages heterogeneous applications, delivering their functionality as a service to NSW Health employees, wherever they may be. This eliminates the need to install complex client software on each user's desktop or mobile devices, reducing application deployment and maintenance time and costs. Mobile users can work on multiple devices and have secure, easy and instant access to applications, allowing them to overcome the productivity challenges associated with a standard desktop.

The functionally rich client-server applications in complex integrated environments can be resource intensive. Grouping and centralising will enable NSW Health to rationalise IT skills required to deliver application services and have more resources to focus on the core business.

“The healthcare industry is increasingly looking for ways to reduce both the costs and the complexity of its IT systems, especially when it relates to application software portfolios and enterprise data - all while delivering quality services to its citizens,” said Ralph Hanson, acting CIO, NSW Department of Health. “The Citrix solution helps to mobilise the Department of Health, providing much needed access for our employees whilst enabling greater control over the quality of data essential to the Electronic Health Record Strategy.”

The contract forms part of a Government requirement to standardise the deployment of its strategic systems, including Patient Administration and Community Health Systems and the introduction of a Unique Patient Identifier. Already used within NSW Health, Citrix was chosen to further manage the complexity of application deployment across the whole of NSW Health. This ongoing relationship allowed Citrix to provide NSW Health with a flexible licensing model.

“NSW Health was looking for ways to boost efficiency, improve its services and increase end-user satisfaction and productivity,” said Gary O’Brien, ANZ vice president, Citrix. “With so many desktops and devices throughout the Department we were able to offer a solution that simplifies IT management and provides long term cost benefits.”
