IBM sees consulting key to compliance battle

In response to SNIA's claim last week that companies are not fully confident about implementing technologies into their infrastructure and managing the processes, IBM says that it has an edge over competitors in easing any concerns.

Garry Barker, IBM's senior storage sales specialist, said the company is very equipped to deal with the most pressing storage and compliance concerns of major organisations in Australia because they had the technology to cope with the requirements, but more importantly, the consulting expertise to manage the business process too.

"Through our acquisition of Price Waterhouse Cooper, we have a significant advantage of being able to apply business consulting expertise to the storage and compliance requirements of our customers.

"Many of our other competitors approach these issues from an IT consulting perspective, which I think misses the point. We believe that companies need to see the business opportunity before they invest in storage products, and should not take on board solutions purely from a technological, IT point of view.

"By the end of the year, we are likely to see a surge in companies taking up ILM packages, such as the ones we offer, because of legal requirements imposed on American companies, which will have a knock on affect to subsidiaries of these organisations based in Australia.

"New legal corporate deadlines will be enforced by the end of the year, so many of these companies will need end to end compliance/storage solutions by then to either sink or swim."

Barker believes that IBM has a wide range of technology devices that can meet all of these different requirements, such as the recently released WORM tape, which can protect data for at least 20 years.

He also said that the Data Retention 450 package (released a few months ago), which combines hardware and software offerings together with customised consulting, will have a huge impact on organisations looking to cope with storage and compliance demands. Barker claims this is because it directly addresses business problems through focused business consulting, as well as providing a strategy for getting the best out of the technology.
