Wireless hard drive makes life easy

Maxtor and Linksys have collaborated to release a new device that allows users to store data externally via a wireless hard drive, making life easier for small businesses that need to store information quickly whilst providing access to everyone.

The Linksys Network Storage Link connects external USB hard drives to a router or switch, then provides access for other users to share that storage over a wireless or wired network. These drives have to support USB 1.1 or 2.0. It plugs into a wireless or wired router or switch through its 10/100 Ethernet port.

In addition, USB-based flash drives and memory sticks can be plugged into the Link an accessed via the network.

This device features tools for formatting new drives, scanning them for disk errors, backing up data and alerting users via email when the drives are almost full or experience a read or write error.

They expect it to be popular with small companies because the technology is easy to install and seems like a miniature version of network-attached storage, in reference to specialised computers that serve up files over networks and are mostly found in bigger companies.

This Linksys Network Storage Link includes a file management system and is designed to work with other external drives apart from Maxtor products.
