Sun intensifies government focus with new unit

Sun Microsystems has created a new unit specifically to target government contracts and has appointment one of its leading executives as its first executive vice president.

Clark Masters, who moves to the newly created role from executive vice president of Sun's Enterprise Systems Products Group, will be responsible for increasing Sun's presence within governments worldwide, bringing to bear Sun's global research and development efforts for secure network computing architectures, and to ensure new technology advancements meet the needs of citizens.

"Government sales present huge opportunities for Sun with increased focus worldwide on security solutions, e-government projects and new compliance requirements," said Masters. "Sun has increasingly found success in creating turnkey and customer-specific solutions and pricing models for governments of all sizes."

The establishment of the new unit is a further indication of Sun's heightened focus on the government market, coming as it does so soon after it announced per-citizen pricing for federal, state and local governments of developing nations that will allow provinces, states and cities in such countries to take advantage of special licensing offers for Sun's Java Enterprise System.

Pricing ranges from USD $0.33 to $1.95 per citizen per year, and is determined based on two factors: the number of citizens in the respective government entity and the stage of development of the country as defined by the United Nations' Department of Economic and Social Affairs classification.
