Open source opponents "are Luddites" - Sun

Sun Microsystems'chief technical evangalist has labelled opponents of the open source movement as Luddites, and described the trend to open source methodology is an inevitable consequence of societal changes wrought by the Internet.

"The luddites fighting the move to open source are certain to be defeated,"said Sun's Simon Phipps.

Based in the US, Phipps is responsible for expounding and explaining Sun's 'big picture' of connected computing solutions. He is due in Brisbane tomorrow (Tuesday 23rd) to deliver a free presentation hosted by vendor-independent distributed systems company, DSTC.

"Sure, different parts of the software market may move to open source technology solutions at different speeds," said Phipps, "but open source is an inevitable societal trend.

"The luddites fighting this move are certain to be defeated," he added.

DSTC's Chief Scientist Dr Andy Bond agrees that open systems are the way of the future.

"Our experience certainly indicates that without a doubt open source is more than a passing fad. It is changing both the economics and sociology of IT. People don't want to be locked into a single vendor - they want flexibility and control."

Phipps' presentation, "Modern Dynamics of Open Source" will cover the context for the open source revolution including practical comments on participants and licensing as well as Sun's experiences in taking projects to open source.

"Sun is probably doing more with open source software than any other major computer company" said Phipps. "In fact Sun used an open source-like model for business success when it was founded in the 1980s, and is still pioneering with the introduction of the Java Desktop System, a desktop environment that combines Linux and the best of open source software todeliver a full featured low cost alternative to the current market leader."
