Plasmon gets UDO boost with HP partnership

Optical storage provider Plasmon has received a major endorsement of its Ultra Density Optical (UDO) technology, after HP agreed to deploy UDO drives into its StorageWorks optical libraries.

UDO drives differ from traditional 5.25-inch magneto optical technology in that they use blue laser technology, rather than the red lasers used in magneto optical and DVD. The blue laser technology offers far greater data density, with the first generation UDO drives offering over 7.4 gigabytes of data storage density per sq. inch compared to just 2.7GB per sq. inch with magneto optical. Plans are already in place to double the capacity of UDO in the next year or so.

HP said it considers optical jukeboxes to be an important component of its Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) strategy, which focuses on helping organisations manage their information more effectively from creation to deletion, with regulatory compliance one of the key drivers of ILM.

UDO offers users that rely on optical storage for long term archiving – such as the healthcare industry – a much higher performing system that magneto optical, helping to cut the cost of long term storage significantly.
