Veritas acquires Ejasent

Veritas has bought Ejasent, a developer of products for utility computing, for US$59 million. Ejasent's core product , UpScale, offers the ability to move an applicaion from one server to another without disrupting or terminating the application.

This technology will provide Veritas with another key building block to help them unite all of their services for the benefit of the customers.

This is all part of Veritas' strategic vision which is focused on developing products that serve as the building blocks for utility computing.

The company has invested heavily in research and development so that it can deliver on this strategy. In fact, almost 20 percent of their revenue is spent in this area, which is well above the industry average.

Ejasent's technology, in particular, dramatically improves availability and reduces costs for an IT utility. Their key product UpScale takes a snapshot of an application and its state, preserving all its current settings and data, and transfers it to a different server in near real time.

Ejasent creates virtually no overhead in the application environment, allowing it to be used in even the most demanding, mission critical applications. This results in a significant reduction in the time and resources required for planned periodic upgrades and application maintenance for IT managers, thereby improving application availability and reducing costs for application users.

Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations for Veritas, is excited about this new addition to their company: "Simplifying the management of IT infrastructure that is 'always on' for end-users is a fundamental objective of utility computing. Live application migration can cut server maintenance and upgrade time from hours to minutes, freeing valuable IT resources to work on other projects while at the same time from hours to minutes, freeing valuable IT resources to work on the other projects while at the same time improving application availability for end-users."
