Adaptec acquires Elipsan

Adaptec will now be able to deliver virtualisation technology for simplified network storage management after buying Elipsan, a network storage infrastructure software provider.

This technology will allow Adaptec to facilitate storage scalability and increase performance across multiple RAID systems.

Storage virtualisation provides IT managers with the ability to capture all network storage capacity physically located through the organisation in a single, easy-to-manage interface. This is essential as storage needs grow and multiple RAID subsystems are added to manage the complex expansion of storage.

The Elipsan's virtualisation and business-continuance capabilities will be integrated with Adaptec's RAID subsystems, so that Adaptec will eliminate the need for a dedicated server or expensive third-party management software.

This will also enable Adaptec to offer faster data backup and recovery to optimise business continuity.

Mark Delsman, vice president and chief technology officer said: "As the market continues to migrate from internal to external, and from direct-attached to fabric-attached storage systems, Adaptec is committed to providing the highest levels of functionality, performance and reliability while simplifying storage management and keeping costs down.

"Adding Elipsan's technology to our existing portfolio will strengthen our end-to-end storage solution offering."

Adaptec will also announce two new products this week. They will launch external iSCSI-to-Serial ATA storage array for channel resellers and Fibre Channel-to-Serial ATA RAID storage system and accompanying enclosure.

The two announcements are designed to allow the company to enter the new iSCSI market with OEMs, as well as provide a second cost-effective Serial ATA solution.
