SAP, Sybase combine on SMB push

SAP has announced that it has partnered with Sybase to use the company's data management software with its own SAP Business One software, which is aimed at the Small to Medium Business (SMB) sector.

The move represents bad news for Microsoft, which has to date been the main database supplier for the Business One suite of products, but will now have its share diluted, with the Sybase tie up meaning that SAP will now be able to offer Business One on Linux and Unix operating systems, as well as Windows.

Additionally, SAP and Sybase will develop and market Sybase mobile software for SAP Business One customers.

Under the agreement, SAP and Sybase will integrate SAP Business One with Sybase's ASE data management solution. SAP will sell and distribute the combined offering through its worldwide partner distribution channels. Both companies will dedicate marketing, alliance and training resources.

The pair have identified the key markets they aim to target with their joint offerings, including financial services, healthcare, insurance and telecommunications.

"Sybase technology is well respected across the world, and offers our customers another attractive database infrastructure for SAP Business One," said Leo Apotheker, executive board member, SAP AG. "This agreement builds upon SAP's successful track record of technology alliances that provide our customers with greater flexibility and choices in their operating environment. In addition, our alliance with Sybase will offer SAP Business One customers access to solutions that get business-critical information out to a mobile workforce."

"Sybase and SAP are committed to bringing a greater range of IT solution choices to the SMB market," said John Chen, chairman, president and CEO of Sybase. "Now, SAP Business One customers will be able to take advantage of Sybase ASE, an industrial-strength data management system that has consistently proven to be a low-TCO leader. In addition, we are thrilled to partner with SAP on mobile and wireless capabilities for SAP Business One, which will bring the benefits of the unwired enterprise - including increased productivity and improved customer service - to small and mid-size businesses.”
